I am a firm believer in immigration. If it were not for immigrants being allowed into our country, I would not be here, having an Irish father from Dublin and a mother from Germany. Where I believe in immigration, I also believe in immigrants passing the standard of becoming Americans. I know this sounds hypocritical when during our current era we have Americans whom were born within our country whom do not pass this standard. This standard of course would entail, passing a standard conversational exam on English as well as standard history.
I also want to add that I do embrace illegal immigration. There are many ways to sort the bad from the good, this of course would call for US companies to embrace illegal immigrants, but in constructive ways, not in ways to exploit them by utilizing cheap labor. Personally, if I were a company that was strategically located near a Mexican border, I would definitely implement a plan for illegal immigrants, meaning, I would allow them employment but only with incentives to become citizens. This would allow illegal immigrants to earn wages which would indeed aid in supporting their families and would not threaten American workers jobs. This act alone would encourage tolerance. If they do not take advantage of the "Citizenship Incentive" after a probationary period of time, I would release them of their services with my company as well as reporting them to the Immigration Service.
I also feel that immigrants, whether illegal or legal, should be law abiding citizens. I feel they should be held to a higher standard due to the reasoning, they were not born here and have chosen our country to live. We are not a country which should settle for the criminals who want to come into our country and reap havoc on our population. They should be law abiding as well as constructive within our society.
I also believe the illegal immigrants should not have access to our Welfare System. Illegal Immigrants do not pay into the welfare system because they are not legal citizens and have not contributed to taxes which is the basis for our Welfare System, therefore, giving no support to the system. This would also be more of an incentive for illegal immigrants to become legal. I have no problem with immigrants going through the process while needing aid, we all need help "here" and "there" within our lives, but I do have a serious problem with my tax paying dollars aiding someone who does not want to legalize and basically mooching off my hard earned dollars, I can say the same about Americans as well.
Everyone within this world should have the right to want a better life for their families. I feel our nation is handling this whole situation wrongly. If we are to allow illegal immigrants into this country, we need to aid them in legalizing, not just allow them to aimlessly wonder around within our nation, they need to come here and work and remain free of crime.
Why does our nation allow foreign students to come here and educate themselves only to leave after achieving their degrees? I feel that foreign students whom choose to educate themselves within our educational system should be forced to give back to our country. They should not be forced to stay indeffinitely, but why can't they stay for an allotted time? Students should not be given full access to our educational system only to turn around and leave our country. They should be mandated to give back to our country, it's only fair in my eyes.
Learning English is very important. I feel no one should work within the United States unless they can speak English. Immigrants do not have to become scholars of the English Language, but this would make obvious sense if an immigrant is serious about naturalizing within our country. If they refuse to speak English then I feel they should be shipped back to their country of origin while rethinking their stubbornness.
I feel immigrants have alot to offer our country. Where I do not feel it's mandatory for military service from immigrants, I do feel they should be given every opportunity in which is offered to US citizens, if indeed they legalize.
I also want to state that protesting by illegal immigrants should be dealt with harshly. Free speech is only awarded to citizens of the United States. Illegal immigrants protesting in my eyes, should be dealt with the same as an invasion. If they want to utilize free speech, then legalize and feel free to demonstrate it, until then, as far as I'm concerned, they have no voice.
President Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on immigration and being an American back in 1907 consisted of the following: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
